THE ZEBULON RECORD Volume XXX. Number 100. Zebulon, N. C., Thursday, March 6,1958 Theo. Davis Sons, Publishers J. M. Chevrolet Co. Gets $300,000 Order J. M. Chevrolet Company of Zebulon was low bidder on mor£ than $300,000.00 in Chevrolet trucks ordered by Carolina Power and Light Company. The local dealer was one of more than 25 dealers competing for the order. The bid was given on 63 Chev rolet trucks, ranging in size from l^-ton to 2%-ton. The Zebulon Chevrolet-Oldsmo bile dealer also was low bidder on a new, black, 4-door Oldsmobile ordered by the company. CP&L was given the option to purchase about 25 additional trucks at the bid price. Delivery will be made during the next 30 days, with all the trucks being serviced in Zebulon. The trucks will be painted at the factory in standard CP&L colors. Z. J. Robertson, president and general manager of J. M. Chevro let Company, has been fn business in Zebulon for over 30 years. The company has sold Chevrolets since it was organized, and added the Oldsmobile line in 1933. Last year Mr. Robertson won a trip to Havana, Cuba, for his sales in Chevrolet cars and trucks. Farm Bureau To Hold Annual Eat On March 12 Paul Shackelford, district Farm Bureau representative, will be the principal speaker at the annual Zebulon Farm Bureau barbecue to be held March 12 at 7 p.m. in the Wakelon School cafeteria. Shackelford, prominent in Farm Bureau work throughout the state, will speak on the subject, “What Farm Bureau Means to Its Mem bership.” The regular Farm Bureau meet ing will follow the supper, Wiley Broughton, president of the local club, has announced. In order to attend this barbecue supper, Farm Bureau members must present a card. This card is being sent to them through the mail. Local OES Attends School For Instruction In Wendell Lawyer's Wife Tp Address Club Mrs. Ferd Davis will give an ex citing five minute talk on line and mass arrangements when the Car men Flowers Garden Club meets Monday night in the home of Mrs. Ruric Gill, Sr. Mrs. Allen Pippin, Jr. will serve as co-hostess. Mrs. Davis, an ardent garden clubber with many years’ experi ence in both club work and study, will deliver the lecture. The ar rangements will be done by Mrs. A. S. Hinton, another club mem ber. Mrs. Carsey Tippett, president, reported the speaker’s time will be limited because of the important business of preparing the program for the flower show to be held on April 23. It is important that all the club members be present, Mrs. Tippett revealed, so that the flower show program may be approved. The Monday night meeting will get underway at 8 p.m. Wendell Chapter No. 87 Order of the Eastern Star in Wendell was hostess to a school of instruction Friday night, February 28. Sister Josephine Southall* Worthy Marton of Wendell No. 87, extended to all a very gracious welcome. The school was conducted by Sister Doris Parker, District Depu ty Grand Matron of the Elever District. She asked the Wendeii officers to exemplify the Installa tion of Officers. Sister Doris had the following to assist her: Sister Glenna Grimes, associate Grand Matron of Grand Chapter as installing officer; Sister Dess Gurganus, Grand Electa of Grand Chapter as installing mar shall; Bro. Hamil Swift, Grand Chaplain of Grand Chapter as chaplain; Sister Soulou Earnhardt of Smithfield No. 121 as organist; Bro. Walter Howard, District Dep uty Grand Patron as warder and Bro. Harold Parker of Rolesville No. 286 as sentinel. Throughout the installation many questions were asked and answers given that will help each chapter which was represented to do a better job in the near future of installing new officers for the (Continued on Page 5) Beulah Christian Church Will Begin Spring Revival Sunday Rev. Carl J. Dixon The Rev. Carl J. Dixon will be gin a series of spring revival serv ices at Beulah Christian Church. The services will begin on Sunday evening and continue each eve ning at 7:30 p.m through Friday, Marclj 14. The Rev. Mr. Dixon is pastor of Mt. Hermon and Wentworth Chris tian Churches in Benson. The Rev. R. Eugene Tally, pastor of Beulah Christian Church, said both he and the people join to gether in extending to the pub lic a most cordial invitation to at tend the revival services. Bulletin It was learned late Wednes day that Dowd Davis, Zebu Ion Baptist Church minister of music, has resigned. No details of the resignation could be learned. Union Seminary Students To Take Church Activities A team of four students from Union Seminary, Richmond, Vir ginia, will visit the Wendell Pres byterian Church Saturday and Sunday and lead activities for young people aged 12 to 14, and 15 to 23. On Saturday at 6, the young peo ple are asked to bring a supper to spread at the church. There will be recreation, and games and singing and a devotional led by the Seminary men. On Sunday, the Seminary men will be teaching in the Adult and Youth Divisions of the Sunday School at 9:45 a.m. At 11 a.m., Eii nos “Whitty” Whitlock will deliv er the sermon; other members of the team will lead the worship. ■ At 4 p.m. on Sunday, there will be discussion groups with the Sem inary men in charge. Supper will follow at 6 p.m. with the Dedica tion service, the highlight of the entire weekend, at 7. Interested young people who would like to at tend are invited to see or telephone Lyman Kiser, FO 5-7170, Youth Advisor. Members of the Seminary team are Louie Fowler of Gadsden, Ala., Art Graham of Richmond, Tom Murphy of Stockton, Calif., and Whitty Whitlock of Floyd, Va. Directors For UN Fund Will Be Named At Meet Four new directors will be elect ed to the Zebulon United Fund board on Thursday night, March 20. President Thomas Monk has an nounced there will be a meeting of a(ll contributing persons of the Fund on this night to elect four new members to the board to re place the retiring members: Ed Hales, Robert Ed Horton, Mrs. George Tucker and H. C. Wade. Mrs. Doris H. Privette, secre tary, said that the directors do not necessarily have to come from the town of Zebulon, but that they may come from the outlying com munities which participated in the United Fund campaign. The Fund officials met Monday night and set the date for the elec tion of new board members, now that the 1957-58 campaign has been completed and the distributions have been made. The meeting is scheduled for 8 p m. in Zebulon Municipal build ing. Bible Study The Bible study and Bible in terpretation class led by Dr. R. C. Briggs of Southeastern Seminary, will meet again next Thursday evening at 7:30 in the Baraca Room. This will be the third of these classed directed toward prep aration for the Sunday School les sons. Dr. Briggs will discuss the teachings of Pauline Epistles and their relationship to the Four Gos pels. Everyone who is interested in this study is cordially invited. In conjunction with this Bible study program at the Baptist Church a T. V. Bible study session is conducted each Tuesday and Thursday night during the month at 7:15-8:30 to hear Dr. Bernard Boyd of Chapel Hill as he eeaches the New Testament. A helpful discussion is led by the pastor, the Rev. Arnold Smith, after each of these programs. The public is cor dially invited to attend. Pre-School Registration, Clinic Set For March 12-19, Principal Says M-Sgt. Alford Gets Citation M/Sgt. Cecil C. Alford of Hq. Sq. Sec., 6000th Sup port Wing, was selected as the Outstanding Mas ter Sergeant of Fuchu Air Sta tion and Yamato Air Station, Ja pan, from the period' of Oct. 1, 1957, to Jan. 31, ' 1958. Sergeant Alford was presented with an engraved gold watch at a brief ceremony in the office of Col. Ernest W. Pate, 6000th Air Base Group commander. Sergeant Alford is sergeant-ma jor with the Wing Adjutant Sec tion. In recommending the NCO for this award, Maj. F. L. Brown lee, Wing Adjutant, said: “The ba sis for this nomination lies within Sergeant Alford’s exercise of lead ership, job knowledge and efficien cy.” The recommendation continues: “Sergeant Alford has demon strated leadership ability to an outstanding degree by example, maintenance of close contact with the airmen he supervises, and ac tive participation in squadron ac tivities. . . . 1 “Sergeant Alford has demon strated an outstanding knowledge of administrative procedures and matters. He is extremely well versed in his job . . . His on-the job performance is highly effi cient.” The 37-year-old master sergeant is the son of Mrs. Susie Alford and the late Mr. Alford. He is married to the former Theda Privette, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Privette. The couple has two sons, David, 16, and Larry, 14. On Television Miss Carolyn Hinton, daughter of Mrs. Ollie Hinton, will perform op TV Station WITN, Channel 7, Washington, today (Thursday) from 1:30 until 2 o’clock. This is Miss Hinton’s participation in be coming a member of Sigma Alpha Lota, a national music fraternity. The local girl is now a pledge and will be initiated along with 12 more students on Sunday. She will play “Passing Clouds” during the half hour television program. She is a freshman at East Carolina College. About 60 First Graders Expected Next Fall All parents who have children who will enter Wakelon school for the first time next fall should be present at the school on Wednes day, March 12, for pre-school registration. Principal John J. Hicks has asked parents who will have chil dren to enter Wakelon school for the first time next fall to be at the school on the above date with their child’s birth certificate. On this day the parents will meet with the school officials, and officials of the county health de partment, the principal said. The pre-school clinic will be held on Wednesday, March 19. Children who are to enter Wakelon School for the first time next fall will be given a thorough examina tion by the county health doctor and county health nurse. Before entering school, the chil dren will be required to be ade quately immunized for diphthe ria, whooping cough, tetanus and to be satisfactorily vaccinated for smallpox. Adequate immunization shall mean that a child was given a complete series of three injec tions for diphtheria, whooping cough and tetanus, preferably be fore twelve months of age, and booster immunization for these three diseases within -twelve months of entering school. Satis factory vaccination for smallpox shall mean that a child must have been vaccinated for this disease within twelve months of entering school. Ideally a child should be vaccinated for smallpox before one year of age and again before en tering school. It will also be pref erable for children to have com pleted their immunization for poliomyelitis. All parents are urged to have their immunization certificates available for the school officials. Principal Hicks reported that a large enrollment of first graders is expected for next fall. He ex pects approximately 60 first year students. Barracks Meet QM A. S. Hinton has announced there will be a meeting of the members of the Zebulon Barracks No. 1131 of World War I veterans on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in the Municipal building. All members are urged to be present for this very important meeting. Mayesville Native To Hold Revival At Methodist Church The Rev. John T. Maides, minis ter of Wesley Memorial Methodist Church in Wilmington will be the guest preacher for tlhie revival services at the Zebulon Methodist Church beginning Sunday, March 9, and continuing through Friday, March 14. The services will be gin at 7:30 p.m. each evening. This is a part of the United Evangelistic Mission sponsored by the N. C. Conference, the Rev. Troy J. Barrett, pastor, has an nounced. v The Rev.
